Eunice Kim 2005-2015: Ten Year Survey

Opening Reception: 'First Thursday' October 1, 6-8pm
Exhibition: October 2 - October 31, 2015

Davidson Galleries is proud to present the ten-year survey exhibition of Seattle artist Eunice Kim. This special installation showcases select collagraphs highlighting the past decade of artist's career and creates a rare opportunity to take in the extensive repertoire of work in one comprehensive setting.

Internationally known and celebrated, Kim's printmaking practice is marked by a singular commitment to safer, sustainable approach to art making. Having developed allergies and sensitivities early in her career to chemicals and solvents commonly used in traditional printmaking media, the artist embarked on an exploration in alternative processes in 2004 and has not looked back.

For more than a decade, Kim has been producing work via a unique nontoxic collagraph process of her own invention. There are no caustic mordants employed in Kim's intaglio technique. Instead, the artist opts to laboriously form, shape, and polish each dot mark on her matrices--which she likens to miniature sculptures--entirely by hand manually and prints them in a solvent-free environment. The results are exquisitely lush and tactile works on paper found at the intersection of concept and process-driven imagery, innovative technique, and rigorous craft.

Born in Seoul, Korea and raised by her grandmother, the artist immigrated to the US at age ten. Kim's signature dot-based visual language is informed by formative experiences growing up in Korea, as well as memories and tendencies both cultural and personal. In artist's own words, the collagraphs are "studies in patterns and relationships, and in how individual entities come together, coalesce, and coexist." Now living and working in the quiet woods of Cascade foothills, the artist continues to be influenced by her immediate surroundings and environment, which serve as constant reminders of the beauty inherent in simplicity.

Kim has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and abroad, including Austria, Bulgaria, China, Egypt, France, Korea, Poland, Spain, and United Kingdom. Most recently, she represented the US at Krakow International Print Triennial (2012), Vienna International Print Triennial (2013), and International Print Award Carmen Arozena in Madrid (2014). Kim is a recipient of numerous accolades, including 4Culture Individual Artist Projects Grant, Arts Council for Long Beach Individual Artist Grant, Flemish Ministry of Culture Artist Residency Award, Kala Art Institute Fellowship Award, and The Puffin Foundation Artist Grant. Her works are found in public, corporate, and private collections worldwide, among them regional holdings of City of Tacoma Municipal Art Collection, Swedish Medical Center Art Collection, and University of Washington Medical Center Art Collection.

The public is invited to join the artist at Davidson Galleries for an opening reception on October 1st at 6-8pm, taking place during Seattle downtown's First Thursday Art Walk in Pioneer Square. The exhibition will remain on view at the gallery from October 2nd through October 31st. All events are free and open to public.
